Paul Merson says England will not have a chance to win the World Cup by playing football Premier League High-Time.
New England chief coach Thomas Tuchel took over on Friday for his first game against Albania, when the debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly justified his selection with the initial goal and the man’s screen.
All the time of the best scorer Harry Kane completed a 2-0 victory, while the trip to the World Cup went to the winning start that England seemed to continue when Latvia, in the 140th place in the world, went to Wembley on Monday.
However, Merson believes that England should have tried and carried out new tactics in order to have any chance of raising the 2026 World Cup.
“Tuchel said he wanted to play a trip to the Premier League,” Merson said Football on Saturday. “He wants to press and play with a high pace.
“The problem is that we will play in the World Cup in a country where it will be hot. Humidity will be unbearable in some places that play.
“I would go the other way. He saw England playing enough times and he would know that we didn’t hold the ball well enough.
“We need to start maintaining the ball better and being patient.
“The wembley audience also has to rely a little more,” he added.
“The fans may also need slightly re-thoughts. They go down on Wembley wanting to see the action. They don’t want to see a 1-0 control and a win. Getting an action watching their teams play in the Premier League. That’s why we love it so much because it can be a corner at one end and 30 seconds later at the other end.
“But England should start changing the way they play. They must be patient and keep the ball.
“I was there. The team knocked on the back, and the crowds were angry. They want the ball forward and quickly, then the players panic and give it.
“We have to be patient. If we are not patient and we don’t have a ball, we have no chance in the World Cup.
“We didn’t hold the ball on the euros and in the end we were punished. We have to do that better.”
‘Lewis-Skelly can continue to get 90 English caps’
Tuchel praised the “incredible” debutator for the creation of Lewis-Skelly, and the left back became the youngest debut for goal, at the age of 18 and 176 days.
Lewis-Skelly met a wonderful passage to defend Jude Bellingham with a smart end to set up England on their way, and Merson was full of praise for the performance of the Arsenal defender.
Merson said, “It’s very difficult to explain what Myles-Lewis Skelly works at this age.”
“To play at the highest level at 18 in Arsenal, where you play in strong pressure every week, this guy has confidence. You have to win the Arsenal every week and he faces that pressure.
“It’s amazing. Remember, at the academy level he played the middle. He now moved to the left back and did not break sweat.
“What scored a goal was to win from the ball. He is ready to run without a ball. For the 18-year-old he did it internationally, that’s what’s amazing.
That is not the goal, but when he sees the space he will come across, when he sees the picture of Jude Bellingham how he has the ball, ready to go through. Making, that’s what’s smart from Lewis-Skelly.
“He is a top, top drawer. He is a player you can see for England, 70, 80, 90 times.”
‘Foden and Rashford won’t get too chance’
Despite the victory over Albania, Tuchel has a lot to think about after the winning start, which left him to want more, and the main coach mentioned the various kinkes that need to iron.
The English wings were among the questions that were with Marcus Rashford, who appeared his first international appearance since last March, and Phil Foden was not as “influential” as the new coach wanted.
The latter is underway with regard to the talented progress of 44 cards – as the player has previously admitted – he took his form of Manchester City to the international stage as he stretched running without participating in England at 17 games at 17 games.
Merson believes that both Foden and Rashford will not have too much time to impress Tuchel.
He said, “Given what Tuchel said about Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden, I don’t think he won’t have too much chance.
“He will probably play in the next game, and he will think that he has gone a bit on them, and he will want to see him respond.
“If they do not perform against Latvia, they will say that we see you later. But it’s not easy to play for England against teams who put 10 players behind the ball. It’s better to play against France where you would be a better player.
“Everywhere Tuchel was, it’s not long there. He enters and doesn’t worry about the harassment of people.
“When everyone had enough, he left.
“That’s what England needs, but it won’t be easy. I still think we will think what the incredible job of Gareth Southgate will do with England.”
