Rangers head coach Barry Ferguson told his players that “I can’t be nice all the time” if they want to beat Fenerbahce and make progress in the Europe League.
Have a 3-1 lead from last week’s games in Istanbulwith the winners who were supposed to face Roma or Athletic Bilba in the quarterfinals of the competition.
But after defeating the return to the Ibrox in the Scottish Cup and the Premiership, Ferguson invites his players to go to get a crowd behind them on Thursday night.
“Sometimes we are too nice, I told my players that we couldn’t be beautiful all the time,” he said. “If this place is swinging, it’s the right place to play football and I told the boys.
“When you go out with a particular attitude to play the game, there is no better place to play football.
“We will continue and tomorrow we will store the challenge, because in my opinion it will be a different game.
“We have to stand high and we have to go head with Fenerbahce because they will come and they will go for us.”
The premiership title of the race is over, and the Rangers sat 16 points behind the Celtics leader. Without hope in homemade silver accessories, the Europa League is the last chance to save something from a disappointing campaign.
Ferguson, however, expects Jose Mourinho to start a real fight after they fell to their first defeat in 18 games in the first part of the first game.
“Mourinho has won 26 trophies in numerous countries. This is a real challenge for me, but I’m not afraid of challenge,” added the former Rangers midfielder.
“He would hurt him last week. You will see a different Fenerbahce here. For the last three days we have worked on different scripts in the game. I have every faith in my player group.
“We need to have a different way of thinking. It was a problem sometimes throughout the season. It’s something that I am in charge of trying to change and do everything so hard to do it, and so are the guys.
“They take everything we give them on board.”
