Charles Leclerc admitted that he felt “bad” after Ferrari’s “boring” disadvantage left him and his teammate Lewis Hamilton from Sprint Pole quarrel at Grand Prix in Miami.
Leclerc qualified sixth on Miami Autodrom, because he finished more than three -tenths of Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli, while the Italian teenager was startled by McLaren’s Oscar Piastra and Lando Norris to ask for his maiden F1 Pol.
Leclerc seems to have made progress in recent weeks because he supported the fourth fourth place with Ferrari’s first podium of the season on the Grand Prix Saudi Arabia two weeks ago, but Monegasque was extremely disappointed after action on Friday.
Asked how he felt in the qualifiers of the sprint, Leclerc replied, “Bad. Krsto was good, but the pace is not there at all so far, so it’s a little uncomfortable, but that’s for now.
“I will do my best to try to do something special tomorrow, but to be honest, there is not much room for progress today. That was just … It’s a tempo of the car.
“It’s really every corner, so it’s not like we’re particularly weak in one type of corner. Yes, it seems that slow speed is a little more of our weakness, but it changes from one weekend to another, so it’s just not great.”
Hamilton: We just miss the speed
Hamilton endured an extremely challenging start to his debut campaign with Ferrari after his relocation to the Italian team after 12 years in Mercedes.
The only notable bright moment from the sevenfold first five rounds of the World Champion season came when he took a pole and won the opening of the sprint of the year in China, but that moment began to look like a false dawn.
Hope is that Hamilton could once again be great in the Sprint format in Miami, but the British was once again significant from Tempa Leclerac, and more than two dozen had separated them.
Hamilton said, “It was a better session. P1 was probably a little better, the car was a little better, the car was a little nicer to ride. We miss the speed, but from there we just continue to work.”
The 40-year-old seemed not to have felt confident that Ferrari could close the gap toward the front runners during the rest of the weekend.
Asked if he can progress in the sprint. Hamilton replied, “Not really. I think all the cars are faster in front of us. I don’t know what else to say.”
As for improvement after Sprint enters the Grand Prix qualification later on Saturday, Hamilton added:
“There are always ideas. Whether they will be right or not … definitely needs to be learned – to make changes, how the car behaves, it should definitely be done to achieve speed by entering the rest of the weekend.”
