Chelsea chief coach Women Sonia Bompastor says that teams “want to be in our position” despite the “disappointing” draw 2-2 against West Ham Women in WSL.
Bluesi ran into a 2-0 lead within 20 minutes in the dominant openingbut they were returned by two targets by Shekier Martinez as the hammers in the form returned to the draw.
The result reduces Chelsea leadership at the top of the table on six points, with Chasing – Arsenal, Man UTD and Man City – everyone won their matches on Sunday.
However, despite his own admission that the elements ‘were not good enough’, Bompastor holds a balanced gaze with his team, which has not yet been beaten into WSL this season.
She said Sky Sports: “We had a really dominant first half, especially the first 30 minutes. We created a lot of opportunities, we needed to score more than two goals in the first half, but we didn’t.
“After that, we allowed West Ham to score from insertion, which is not good of us. The performance in the second half was not good enough to achieve a better result.
“We also admitted too many situations in defense, but when you look at the bigger picture, there are four games left, six points are clear and in a really good position. The teams will want to be in our position.
“It’s a disappointing result, but we’re in a really good position that we’re still going to the next block … We have to stay together and be positive.”
Sunday’s match marked the end of a few weeks for Chelsea, including a four -game trial with Man City in three competitions. They beat their rivals at WSL on Thursday night in the Champions League to get to the semifinals, and are also in the last four FA Cup.
But Bompastor does not use his schedule as an excuse to draw, adding: “This block (from games) was crazy. We played so many games – eight games in 28 days, we traveled a lot, played intense games – and it is always difficult to have all the energy with this fast turn.
“But that is not an excuse. We have depth and quality in the team enough to end this block with a better result. But sometimes it happens when you are not clinically enough.”
Skinner delighted with the character West Ham
For West Ham, they are now undefeated in the last three WSL games, and they have lost only once in the last five. This race includes taking points from Chelsea and Man City.
Hammer chief Remanne Skinner said Sky Sports: “It’s the first time we had a Chelsea point. We worked incredibly hard and in the end we created problems for them. I am delighted with the character and how the team went into the game.
“We probably want to forget the first 20 minutes or something, but after that we grew into it and we did well to reach the goal.
“The depth of the detachment has improved … and that is the attitude” Never Say Die “throughout the team. Belief and confidence in these has grown so much on the basis of the way we play.
“The character in the team brings us to a point we know we can get something out of it.”
West Ham is now in seventh place in the WSL table, and Skinner added: “We ask us to finish as much as possible towards the table.
“I never look at the bottom of the table, just the teams we try to catch and that’s what started this team game on the game. We’re focused on the one in front and we want to beat the next team.”
Christensen: West Ham wasn’t lucky, they worked hard
Izzy Christensen on Sky Sports: “Bringing Martinez to the side gave West Ham a lot of beliefs into the area … They form a beautiful trio in front of with Assyi and Ueki.
“What impressed me the most today was the play in the game and a competitive. The way they followed in the second half were in Chelsea’s faces and deserved a lot of merit.
“West Ham is not lucky right now and they worked hard to achieve results. This is coming because they got stuck in their task and believed in what they were doing.
“It’s a message to other teams in this league to be patient, and also knowing that this is a process. The point in the champion is exceptional for West Ham.”
