Formula 1 will not return to the V10 engines in the immediate future after a “productive” meeting between FIA -EI teams was held on Friday.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayum ran a meeting, previously expressed his opinion that the F1 should consider the return to the V10 engines, which were last used in 2005.
Ben Sulayem pushed his return as early as 2028, but new regulations 2026, which would see a large change of power unit and chassis regulations, should be in effect by 2030.
Sky Sports News He realizes that he is not in place for the next F1 engine formula after 2026.
“In the opening of the meeting, FIA president wanted to emphasize that the purpose of the gathering was to look for a profitable solution to protect the long-term sustainability of sports and Formula 1 business,” read the FIA statement.
“FIA has firmly committed to Formula 1 2026. The FIA Technical Department, together with numerous stakeholders, has invested a lot of time in framing the regulations 2026. On hybrid electric units with 100 percent of the sustainable fuel.
“The regulations 2026, the power unit and the chassis control unit, attracted new manufacturers of power units to Sport – undergoing that the correct technical path was selected for the 2026 cycle.”
Red Bull Team Director Christian Horner said Sky Sports F1: “It was a very cordial, productive meeting.
“FIA President asked for feedback on what the next generation would look like. 2026 is absolutely fixed, but thinking a little further down the line for which the rights are for F1.
“Surely not 2027 (for a potential return to the V10 engines), quite impossible for 2028, so everything is subjective. This is a fact of finding missions at the moment, everything is all the way to the PU producer to return to FIA and he will progress from there.”
The F1 should at least four engine manufacturers to vote to change the regulations.
Mercedes, Ferrari and Honda will remain in sports of 2026, and the Red Bull propulsion assembly, in partnership with Ford, supplying electric units for Red Bull and Racing Bulls.
Honda planned to leave F1 after this year, but she will remain in sports, although as the only Aston Martin supplier. Audi will join F1 for the first time while they take over Sauber.
The new Cadillac F1 team will also join Grid 2026, and will run under Ferrari Power, but they plan to use their own power unit by the end of the decade. General Motors was also part of a meeting held on Friday.
FIA wants to reduce costs in F1
Regulations 2026 will see 50 percent of the engine powered by electricity and will be completely launched on sustainable fuels.
FIA confirmed electrification “will always be part of future considerations,” and the use of sustainable fuels is “imperative”. This means that each return of the V10 engine would almost certainly include an electric element.
Further discussions will be held on the future of F1, but all teams are dedicated to the 2026 regulations, which will also see smaller, faster cars.
“The inevitable when you achieve a great change in regulation, there is a deviations of performance and that will almost certainly happen next year,” Horner said.
“The second topic that was discussed this morning was how quickly the convergence could be? We have a budget restriction, may not need to be homologry, you may be able to upgrade your engine under that budget limit, that everyone has the same, in order to encourage convergence as much as possible.
“We all want to have a close quarter of the race, not a repetition of what we had in 2014 (when one team dominated).
“What is the future, is everything subjective and speculative. I thought it was a healthy debate. Everyone was open and open to ideas about the future, because which route would take over the car industry, what effect will the tariffs have? F1 must also protect itself.”
