George Russell and Kimi Antonelli received one -placed criminal penalties to leave their garages too early during the Grand Prix Bahrein qualifiers.
Russell will now start a race on Sunday in Sakhir from the third behind Oscar Piastra and Charles Leclerca, with Pierre Gasly in the fourth, and Antonelli in the heel.
The Mercedes duo was published in early Q2 before the session restarted after a serious Esteban Ocon accident in 3.
The manager’s statement explained: “The team representative, Mr. Shovlin, stated in the evidence that he gave instructions for cars to be published in the error when he misinterpreted the message published on the three -screen screen -” Estimated time of re -launching ” – to advise the message that advises the actual time of re -launching.
“He claimed that there was no sporting advantage in this case because there was enough time (11 minutes) for other teams to execute their plans.
“It was also noticed that the sports director of the team, Mr. Meadows, was not present at the event and that he would usually be involved in the release process.
“Fia Sport Director Single Seding said such a move could be a sports advantage in that he could allow a team to perform his running plan, while other teams may not be able to.
“The flight attendants agree with these views, especially where there are only a few minutes left in the session.
“The FIA S
“Mr. Shovlin claimed that it was possible to give criminal sentence if the managers declared that it could not be taken as a precedent, but also said that if a sports sentence should be given, it should be mitigated.
“The flight attendants agreed with the attitude that this violation required a sports punishment, however, they accept that violation is an inadvertent and true mistake of the team, which made Mr. Shovlin apologized.
“Let’s decide to impose a penalty with one position.
“A similar violation in different circumstances could imply a serious sports sentence in the future.”
Wolff: No precedent for this situation
Prior to the penalty, the Mercedes Toto Wolff team director said there was no precedent for this situation.
“There is no precedent. In that sense, there is a new rule and we will see what the managers say,” Wolff said Sky Sports F1.
“I hope these are not drivers who were punished for that. It was a team. We jumped a gun here.”
Russell added: “I have never heard of a temporary message before. The time is usually appeared, and as teams you are always ready and you wait to get that time to restart because it is a rush from the pits. And as soon as we saw that time, we went to it. And then as soon as we saw that he said” the expected time to restart. ”
“I mean, it was 12 minutes to enter the Q2. It would be pretty funny if you get a fine. But if you get a fine of 20,000 euros for being on the toilet, who knows what the punishment will be (it will).”
