Crystal Palace entered the quarterfinals of FA Cup after winning 3-1 against the local rival Millwall, but the victory was extinguished after Jean-Philippe Mateta stretched out.
The incident entered in six minutes. Mateta caused a high ball just outside the area when goalkeeper Millwall Liam Roberts left his box, grabbing the head of the Palace striker with a high boot.
After checking the monitor on the field, Judge Michael Oliver sent Roberts, and Mateta received almost 10 minutes of medical aid on the field before she took off. He was taken straight to the hospital.
Crystal Palace President Steve Parish described it as “the most amazing challenge on the football field I’ve ever seen” when he spoke with BBC at halftime.
Orlovs started increasing their chances with an additional player, and they made the breakthroughs in the 33rd minute – though not of one of their own. Defender Millwall Japhet Tangang nodded home from Will Hughes, beating the replacement goalkeeper Lukas Jensen.
Seven minutes later, Crystal Palace doubled his lead, and Tanganga had her second hand. Daniel Munoz turned home from a six -yard box, but the goal was initially excluded due to the offsed.
Oliver canceled it, and Var confirmed that the goal would stand after the ball came down from Tangnge before Munoz turned home – which means he was not in offsid.
But with the last shot of the first half, Millwall gave himself a rescue line. Matt Turner initially pushed the cross, but landed in the arrival Wes Harding, who shot home.
And the lions started the second half and they would feel that they should have equalized. But once Crystal Palace was settled, it was clear that he would see the game and added the safety of the third goal in the 81th minute.
It was a well -deserved goal for Eddie Nket, who replaced Mateta. The free kick of Eberechi eze nodded to Chris Richards, before the former Arsenal striker scored home to secure Crystal Palace in Sunday withdrawal.
Parish: I’ve never seen a challenge like that
Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parish to BBC Sport at halftime on Jean-Philippe Mateta injury:
“Behind the ear and the head injury has a bad dog. She is in the hospital and hopefully the best.
“There are a lot of emotions in football, but we have to talk about this challenge. I have never seen a challenge like that … It’s the state of a state -of -the -art challenge on the football field I’ve ever seen.
“He has to look hard for a long time because he threatens a colleague of a professional with such a challenge.
“And why the judge has to go to the screen, I have no idea … If you hit him in your head in full strength, who knows what the damage can do.”
Glasner: It’s a terrible offense
Crystal Palace Chief Oliver Glasner at BBC Sport on Jean-Philippe Mateta:
“He is aware of the hospital as well. His ear looks awful. It is a very serious injury and we hope he will best.
“We can’t be really happy. Of course it’s a great victory and a quarterfinals, but when you lose a player with a foul like this, you have two different feelings in your stomach.
“I didn’t want to see him, but I have to talk about it. It’s awful (challenge). I’m sure the goalkeeper did not want to injure JP in this situation because no player wants it.
“But if you go like this with a ball with intensity in your head, you just can’t do it because it’s so dangerous. I don’t want to blame him, but it’s a terrible offense.”
To the answer of his players and games: “The players went well until the 55th minute in the first half. We controlled the game and we were on the road. Then we gave up the ball unnecessarily before halftime, and then they were 2-1 and then picked up their belief.
“The second half is not exactly the best game, but Eddie decided to do it with an incredible header. Going to the quarterfinals FA Cup is a great achievement and now they are crossed with fingers, we hope it is best for JP.”
Neil disagree with the parish: not the worst challenge I’ve ever seen
Millwall boss Alex Neil in BBC Sport when asked about half-time comments by Steve Parish on the challenge of Liam Roberts:
“I don’t think there is intention. Why would it be? It’s the beginning of the game, the ball is put behind and he’s trying to get there.
“I would certainly not designate him as the worst challenge I saw. We don’t want the guy to hurt himself so naturally, we want to do well and hope that he will return to the field soon.
“For me, what was wrong, he sent it, he is disappointed. We want to Mateta well and that’s nothing more than that for me.
“At the time that happened, I didn’t know if he caught a guy or grabbed the ball because the ball seemed to go at a strange angle.
“Unfortunately, (screens) on the excavation side they did not work, so we couldn’t watch the incident back.
“I haven’t seen him since then, but he smelled it and sent it, which makes it difficult at that stage of the game twice as difficult. It was disappointing. He called it and didn’t understand it well.”
On accepted goals: “The nature of the goals is most disappointing me. One is its own goal, the other is when we hit the ball from our own player and she lands the guy into the box and he achieves results. Then we lose two headers in a row. When you go down to 10 men, you want to make them work on your goals.
“We gave ourselves a somewhat rescue line by scoring a goal before halftime. The plan was then to stay in the game as much as we could and hope to score another goal. I intended to go to two tops, and they achieved just as we were about to make a SUB, which summarized the day for us.”
