In the Lancaster House, the 19th century, adjacent to the Bakingham Palace, it felt as a moment of truth for Europe, when the continent’s largest powers gathered to try to save something from the destroyed postwar order.

Sir Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron, who worked in tandem, in London had a clear message: Europe must prove Donald Trump what is part of the decision for crisis on your own continentNot part of the problem.

As one of the Allies of the UK Prime Minister said before the meeting, there was no alternative to break things out with the White House: “The Prime Minister will unite people and politely make sure that there is only one negotiation in the city -and it is President Trump.”

Starmer said he meant that Britain and France would kill Zelensky, what the settlement might look like after an attempt in Ukraine, and then to accept the Trump European Plan, acting as mediators in the toxic relationship between Kiev and Washington.

On Sunday, the British Prime Minister insisted on Sunday that any final transaction should attract Ukraine-including any agreement on where the “line” will be made after the holding-but in the meantime, Europe will head diplomacy on behalf of Kiev.

Such a delicate – perhaps the impossible task – it now accounts for three European leaders with whom Trump seems to have the best relationship: Starmer and Macron, who visited the White House last week – and the Italian Georgia Meloni.

“It is very important for us to avoid the risks that the West divides,” Meloni said in the bilateral talks for the long -standing stories in front of the Lancaster House summit.

The perspective of a permanent break between Europe and the US is already causing glitter in Kremlin. Presidential Press Socialist Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov greeted Trump’s administration for “dramatically changing all its foreign policy configurations” and unfolding toward Moscow to invade Ukraine.

Pesko told state television that Trump’s position “coincides largely with our vision.” He said it was “impossible to imagine” earlier that the US and Russia would vote together for the UN resolution that did not blame Moscow in the conflict.

The real danger of the transatlantic gap hung at the meeting of the Lancaster’s house, bathed in early spring sunlight. As if to emphasize the risk, Elon Musk, Trump’s bureaucracy, quotes the message From the US political commentator on its X platform on Sunday, it said “time to leave NATO and the UN”. The billionaire added: “I agree.”

Starmer and Macron left their way to throw a diplomatic hand around Zelensky -literally in the case of the UK Prime Minister for Downing on Saturday. King Charles also met with the Ukrainian leader on Sunday.

But behind the hug for the Ukrainian leader, it was a difficult warning that the path to any lasting peace is going, though the White House and that Zelensky should start talking to Trump again and sign the deal to convey Some future rights to the minerals In his country to the US.

According to British officials, Starmer was in pain to make it clear to Trump on Saturday evening that the Lancaster summit was not a case of Europe trying to resist it.

“The priority of the Prime Minister is to do everything necessary to protect Ukraine,” said the British official. “This means that the United States should participate. You have to fix this relationship and return to this useful business.”

But, according to European diplomats, Starmer, Macron and Meloni also agree that they will have to lead diplomatic efforts to maintain the US security guarantee not only over Ukraine but also on the continent.

Starmer and Macron promised the UK-French force to ensure that the Ukraine’s conflict is reassured and urged other European countries to join the “coalition of the willing”. So far, it was hardly stamped to help.

According to British officials, they made it clear that such force would be condemned to failure if the US does not provide a “back platform” – or more precisely the air cover and observation of the defense of European troops on Earth.

Starmer also noted the dangers of unduled agreements with Putin, citing a failure of Minsk agreements in 2014 and 2015. “We cannot accept a weak deal as Minsk, which Russia can easily break,” he said.

But Trump did not give any instructions that he was ready to offer help to provide any agreement. European promises to convert-president tells the continent to stop frring on the US guarantee for the best part of the decade, will come too late.

This week, Trump said Starmer that he considers the future presence of US companies and workers in Ukraine – using the country’s mineral reserves – it is enough to contain Putin.

Europe may be trying to control the damage for the desire of other options. On Sunday, Macron told La Tribune Dimanche newspapers that “he tried to make Americans understand that the shutdown from Ukraine did not cause their interests.”

“We should not deprive efforts to maintain a strong transatlantic connection,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda wrote after writing a video with Starmer and other Baltic leaders on Sunday morning.

Some European capitals also have deep concern, especially those along the EU’s Eastern flank, which are most threatening Russia and are especially dependent on US defense that the rupture with Trump over Ukraine can further blow up the USA’s commitment to NATO’s collective defense.

Kiev’s Meloni supporter, who also has a good relationship with Trump, goes with ideas to limit the fall of the Oval Service, with its public call to the immediate summit of the United States-EU to discuss Ukraine’s future and telephone conversation with Trump on Saturday night.

But Germany, Spain and Poland are part of countries that did not seek to send troops to Ukraine, while the EU is just now making a plan to try to increase the continent’s expenses.

In London, there is a frustration that some of Europe’s leaders should stop publicly criticizing Trump and his diplomatic attack on Zelenskyy and start showing the White House, they have the will to take responsibility for their yard.

“What Ukraine now requires is a weapon and butter,” said one Starmer ally. “It does not require people to twist and the virtue alarm.” There was a lot of talk in Lancaster’s House on Sunday, but Europe knows what it needs to be done.
