Prevost, the first American to become the Pope, is regarded as a compromise candidate who could find extensive support in the divided Catholic Church. It will be known as Pope Leo XIV.
“Peace will be with you all,” Pope Leo said to the crowd of people on St. Peter’s Square. “I want this salute of peace to come into your heart, reached its families and all people, and all peoples, and the whole world.”
In a report of Sutice Social, US President Donald Trump said: “Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost. It’s such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What a great honor for our country. I look forward to meeting with Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very significant moment!”
A native of Chicago, 69, spent decades as teaching and ministry of the priest in Peru, later ruled the troubled diocese and became a member of the Peruvian Bishop.
In the Vatican, since 2023, Prevost has been managing the Curia Division for the purpose of the bishop.
