In his last week as a ruling champion Jockey, Harry Cobden joined unrestrained to think about the Rollercoaster season, his love for the winners of the big money and remained a fundamental Paulo Nicholls.
In Sandown on Saturday, Sean Bowen was crowned with a new champion after he escaped with a title in the 2024/25 rebound race.
Cobden’s challenge never actually came down from the ground in the fall because Tim Paul Nicholls started under his usual sublime standards.
But in a classic two-halked game, Cobden and Nicholls gathered strongly from the turn of the year, and the 26-year-old shone with some unforgettable winning rides, which is the best of a party in Scottish citizens on the Willie Mullins coached captain Cody.
“It was a Rollercoaster,” Cobden said. “The early door, Chepstow was slow for us, but I won the Greatwood obstacle for James Owen. We still had winners, we just didn’t work at the same speed as we would normally have.
“It was a slow start to Christmas, but Cheltenham, Aintree, Ayr, even Plumpton, everyone was great.”
Teaching the title of Jockeys this year Bowen, Cobden said, “I am delighted with Sean. I thought he was very unhappy not to win him over last year.
“It’s never nice to beat someone when they were on the side for six weeks.
“He had to wait for an extra year, but he drove great all season, so if anyone deserves, that’s him.
“He has a different way of thinking. I’m happy to go to drive quality, while Sean drives 250/1 shots because he said the summer would win in races.”
Asked what motivates him, Cobden revealed, “I love money. Now I am 26 years old, let’s say that I have been left five to 10 years in my career, I want to make the most of the opportunity, take every opportunity of both hands, drive as many winners as possible and make as much money as possible.
“I hope Harry Cobden will withdraw from the racing ride, he can lift his legs and move on to other things.”
With the Punchestown Festival on the horizon, Cobden is ready to travel to Ireland, where Nicholls’ triunderthrufive could get to know Captain Cody well.
Despite his recent success at Captain Cody, Cobden will not leave his boss.
“I will not even have a conversation (about taking off with three recesses),” Cobden said. “Max McNeill is a great owner of Paul, and I’m Paul’s stable jockey.
“There is a time and place to get off Paul’s horses and Saturday is probably not a day.
“You have to be loyal to the people who look after you and Saturday is one of those days where you may not drive the best horse, but you work properly.
“It will pay off in the long run.”
