If Tyson Fury came out of retirement, WBC opened the way to return straight to the world level competition.
Fury, a former WBC heavyweight champion, would be sanctioned to fight Agit Kabayel for the WBC Temporary Belt if he leaves a pension.
The 36-year-old teased his return to the ring on social networks, posting a video of himself walking down the tunnel at Manchester United Stadium Old Trafford with a reference to 2025 and the message ‘Did I miss you?’.
Kabayel won the belt with an impressive victory over Zhilei Zhang when he got up from the canvas to break Zhang with a body shot in six circles.
German Kabayel is an apparent candidate who will be a mandatory challenger for the complete WBC world title, one of the belts held by unique champion Oleksandr Usyk.
But that mandatory shot is unlikely to be called in the near future.
Said WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman Sky Sports: “We were very flexible and supported the undisputed concept. We fought very hard to become undisputed (in Teška) and did not impose a mandatory anger to allow him to fight against Usyk, we made it clear that the winner would do a rematch without any mandatory.”
He continued: “The winner of Zhang-Kabayel is the highest level. But we also support (undeniable) again, because how can you see that Usyk loses his belt? That was awful. Now we could fight for an unwavering (Daniel) Dubois. We’ll see. We won’t push anything.”
But Sulaman believes that holding his temporary heavyweight belt could lead to Kabayel in major struggles, suggest, Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder or really anger, if he decides to reverse retirement.
“We (we will support the undisputed fight against the heavyweight title) and we will evaluate what is happening, what is the best scenario,” Sulaiman said.
“(Kabayel) has a temporary WBC championship that (he) can defend. There are other big fights like Joshua, Wilder, or in the end of even anger. So many other possible big struggles.
“(Joshua,) is highly ranked in WBC, he is a legendary champion and we will support him of course.
“We absolutely support only that the best fights can happen.”
Fury lost two close decisions by USYK two difficult fights from the highest level last year. But in January, he announced a surprise of a pension from the sport.
Although Fury did not give public indications that he was planning to reverse that decision, WBC would support him, the former holder of the full World Championship of this sanction, for this temporary title fight.
Sulaiman noted, “He withdrew, as you remember, and WBC supported him to fight Wilder for the first time and that he was a hell of a fight. It was a draw and it brought up to two big additional games with Wilder, and then to what we saw in the last three or four years, and now it’s a dream that is going on (in boxing).
“I talked to him. He told me that he was retired and I congratulated him. You’re going out and you have a nice family, you’re multimillionae. But boxers have something. It’s very difficult to step down, but I’m happy to be retired.
“If he changed his mind and try, I’m sure the doctors will be good, the option is open.”
