Trains canceled across Bangladesh as rail union goes on strike

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Trains were canceled throughout Bangladesh on Tuesday, when railway employees were hunted for high pensions and other benefits, affecting tens of thousands of passengers and transporting shipping.

Saeed Rahman, Acting Head of the Railways Administration Team in Bangladesh and the Workers’ Union, said that the strike was called after a meeting with the interim government headed by the Nobel Prize holder Salam Mohamed Yunus to reach an agreement late on Monday.

Rahman said that the strike will continue indefinitely if the government does not accept its demands.

The country -run railway system carries about 65 million passengers annually in the 170 million populated nation. It employs about 25,000 people and runs a network of more than 36,000 km (22,000 miles).

The main Kamlapur railway station in the capital, DHAKA, has been mobilized by hundreds of frustrated passengers who were not aware of the strike. Wait a lot for hours before going home.

With a visit to the country’s railway consultant, the passengers shouted complaints.

Hussein’s testimonies, a station director in Dhaka, said that he was scheduled to leave at least 10 trains on Tuesday morning. The authorities arranged buses as an alternative.

They were crossed by Muhammad Ndim at the Kamelbur railway station, where hundreds of kilometers traveled during the night to reach Dhaka to spend his vacation to the southern coastal area of Cox Bazar.

I came here at 5:30 am from Dhaka. But after one hour or so, I knew that my train would not run. Now I have been cut off here for hours without any hope. Station officials told me that my ticket funds will be compensated, but I don’t know when. ”

He refused to travel to his destination by a bus, and the authorities arranged as a substitute.

“It’s too far. I came here to travel by train. I don’t want to travel so far with an air -conditioned bus. Now they offer me this bus that does not contain air condition.”

The Daka -based Jamuna TV station stated that railway workers protested Cattogram, the second largest city in the country. The southeastern city has the largest sea port in the country, and the huge clothing industry depends on trains to bring goods to export. The industry earns about 38 billion dollars annually from exports, especially to the United States and the European Union.

In the northwestern region of Rajshahi, angry passengers broke the furniture of a station and attacked employees, according to TV.

The interim government led by Yunus has been running the country since August, when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has fled to India amid an uprising led by students and ended its rule for 15 years. The temporary administration is struggling to restore the matter amid reports by international lending agencies such as the World Bank or the Asian Development Bank with a slower economic growth.
