Rob Cross wants to encourage the PREMIER League playoffs, while Stephen Bunting promises not to go to Littlel Little in Birmingham.
Former Cross World Champion is embarking on his conflict with the sevenfold Premier League winner Michael Van Gerwen, hoping to pile up more misery on the Dutchman, and the time disappeared in the race to reach the O2 for Final Night on May 29.
‘The Voltage’ only sits three points behind Van Gerwen in the rankings, although no player has yet picked up the night win.
Players are headed to Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on Thursday night, but they face quarrels in the race for play-off with Leeds, Aberdeen and Sheffield who remained.
“I would like to think that I could do it in three weeks, to be honest,” said Cross, who won six of his last seven matches against Van Gerwen. “But be realistic, if you go down to last week, then you just have to show your minerals, and you just have to continue to connect and finish.
“I think it’s the biggest thing for me. I had some unhappy results, but I didn’t let anything affect me. I managed to put it on the back of my head and just continue with it. I was very impressed with myself, with my attitude towards her this year.
“I have to start going now, going back to there, at least to a point, probably by this week. You don’t want to leave it last week, that’s for sure. But then you don’t want to be out of it the last week. So a mass important game.”
Cross, who also won the world game a year after his success at the Alexandra Palace 2018, is not surprised by the fighting Van Gerwen, saying that this year’s Premier League is incredibly competitive compared to the previous years.
He added, “I think the two Lukes somehow raised the top and they got a little pillow compared to the others. But a testimony to the other six players. We are all close. We are around the other everywhere. It doesn’t surprise me in a minute because I still don’t think Michael was in his brilliant best. But they may not play for that.”
Bunting promises not to go to Littler
Stephen Bunting promised that Manchester United fans Luke Littler would not win the Liverpool title in the Premier League, and ST Helens should have faced the world champion in the first match of the night in Brum.
“I don’t want to wander too much because I got that first game!” Bunting was joking, who had previously collected a night win in Berlin in Berlin.
“I will probably leave him until after the game and I hope to get the result against them, but he is such a fantastic player, he brought a new breath of air to Darts and you see him with the demographic fans that follow our sport.
“He brought him to the young children. I managed the Mathematics session Bullseye the other day, and at the beginning of the session the teacher asked how many people picked up the darts. This was the age group between eight and nine years and everyone – except one person – picked up a set of pacids, so it shows how much our sport will be spent in such a small time.”
The ‘bullet’ was stuck in Austria who competed on a European tour, so he was forced to miss Liverpool’s victory 5-1 against Tottenham on Sunday.
“It was hard to look at him outside and not be a part with fans, celebrations,” he admitted.
“I sent a message of several players and I can’t imagine what they went through. Obviously the last time we won the league, there were no fans and there was no parade, so I can’t wait to be on the streets when the parade happens. It will be such a great day for the club.”
Bunting attached to the Hope for Play-offs
Bunting, world no. 4, he still hopes to make a Play-off Premier League, although the time remains with only four nights.
He said: “I think the first eight games of the Premier League were a bit scary. Obviously we are not used to playing in front of 10,000 to 12,000 people in the week, and I think the pressure on the walk came to me for the first few weeks.
“Now I have dealt with it, I believe I have suffered it all and I enjoyed every second of the Premier League. I think it’s a great place to play and I don’t just want to be this year, I want to be in it for many years.
“There are several other games left that can withdraw from that bottom and still stick to a little hope that I can still get into the play-off.”
Positive thoughts for bunging
Because I am stress, Bunting added: “I think you have to block all the negative to be honest. I’ve seen a hypnotherapist for the last two or three years and he really makes me think in a positive way.
“The brain is 95 percent negative, so it’s easy to get into it, but I think that with the sessions we do, there is only a kind of bucket that is filled with negative thinking and obviously it can lead to anxiety and stress.
“It’s about emptying a bucket in your brain, be careful to go to sleep at the right time and make sure you are in a big mood in the afternoon.
“Even in the losses this year and last year, I took every single positive from the game, whether it was a loss of 6-0 or a loss of 6-5, and I think it really got me really good by the end of the season and the years to come.”
