An Israeli restaurant in Brooklyn was vandalized over the weekend in what New York City Mayor Eric Adams called a “despicable act of anti-Semitism.”

The New York City Police Department told Fox News Digital that its Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating after the phrases “Israel Steals Culture” and “Genocide Kitchen” were found spray-painted on the exterior of Miriam’s Restaurant early yesterday morning.

“This was a despicable act of anti-Semitism at Miriam’s beloved Israeli restaurant in Park Slope,” Adams wrote on X, sharing photos of the restaurant’s front door covered in red paint.

He added: “As mayor of the city with the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, I am deeply saddened by this evil act. Make no mistake, the NYPD is investigating the matter and will find those responsible.”

The restaurant said it had been “unfortunately vandalized with hate messages”, but “we refuse to allow this to darken our spirit”.

“Myriam represents inclusivity, unity, and bringing people together through a shared love of delicious food and warm hospitality. We celebrate the diverse flavors of the Mediterranean, where cultures intertwine and stories are shared,” she wrote on Instagram. “We will continue to be a safe place where everyone feels welcome. Join us in spreading love, not hate.”

Miriam’s second location in Manhattan’s Upper West Side neighborhood was vandalized in 2022, according to the New York Post.

Owner Rafi Hasid decided to open his Brooklyn location on Sunday, with messages still written on the glass, the newspaper reported. Three masked individuals were reportedly seen targeting the property at around 3am on Sunday.

Hasid told the newspaper: “I want people to see it. I don’t want to wash it off right away. People should see…that such things happen.”

The NYPD told Fox News Digital that as of Monday morning, “there have been no arrests, and the investigation is being handled by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Representative Ritchie Torres, both Democrats from New York, posted messages of support for Maryam in the wake of the incident.

“I visited Miriam’s restaurant this evening in Brooklyn that was vilely vandalized last night,” Schumer wrote on X. “I met the owner, the employees, and their customers. I told them that I stood with them, and that vandalizing a restaurant because the owner was Jewish was downright anti-Semitic, and that there is no place for hate in New York.” .
