Lando Norris revealed that he had “luck” that he had completed the Grand Prix Chinese after “Nightmare” is a carriage on the way to the second place behind the winner of Oscar Piastra.
Norris was only three seconds with Piastra and potentially missed the opportunity to become his McLaren teammate under pressure when his brake pedal went “long”, so his car did not slow down properly.
He crossed the line just 1.3 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell and thinks he would have withdrawn if the race had been several laps for a long time.
“The last four, five, six rounds were awful,” Norris said Sky Sports F1.
“I don’t advise! It’s like visiting a roundabout without a brake. It wasn’t nice. I don’t think we knew exactly what was it or what was happening.
“We were lucky to finish the race. George was only lagging behind only one second. It’s the worst nightmare of the driver, the brakes have failed. This is the worst feeling when you press the brakes and nothing happens and the foot goes to the floor.
“I had enough enough to finish, but another or two rounds and I don’t think I would have.”
Stella: The brake issue is not acceptable
The International Circle in Shanghai has one of the largest braking zones on the calendar at the end of a long back, where the complete failure of the brake could have great consequences.
The director of the team McLaren Andrea Stella did not refrain from the problem, which could have led to a major accident for Norris.
“I am satisfied with one two. We were tense on the wall of the pit and I am sure that the whole team and the fans had one problem on the Land car with a brake pedal we needed to operate in the last 20 laps,” Stella said.
“Lando and the team did a very good job in a loop that it was to adapt the style of driving to this kind of problem, which then became worse and worse through the race and put the whole result at risk – which is obviously not acceptable from the point of view of reliability.
“We have to do better and this will be one of the points that we will definitely reappear to the whole team that worked on an incredibly high level, but we cannot have problems with such results have put such results in danger.”
Norris praises the “amazing team” to build the best car
Norris still runs the F1 driver championship with eight points over Max Verstappen, who finished fourth on Sunday.
McLaren emphasized why they are favorites to defend the title of their constructors since last year with an early lead of 25 points over Mercedes. Red Bull are 42 points compared to McLaren and Ferrari already 61 points after that Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are disqualified.
Norris added: “The team does an incredible job in maintaining a car as strong as it was. There are still years of the same regulations and becomes harder and harder to make faster.
“For the team who did such a job during the winter, he is responsible for them that they gave us the car they have. Thank you all for the MTC, because it is not easy. When you listen to them talking and describing how difficult it is, you owe them much when you have a car as it does.
“Although we always complain, we did it to do so! So, all the credit for that because we believe we have the best car, this is a fact. We know that it is difficult to drive, and definitely harder than last season, but as long as we can bypass it and improve it as the next step, we will be convinced.”
