With the start of the reopening of schools throughout the affected areas of forest fires in Los Angeles, parents have concerns about the toxic ash that may be harmful to their children.
Kelly Veroni’s Girls School, Canyon Charter Elementary School, can open its doors on Monday. But after cleaning the campus just half a mile from a destroyed plateing fire on its own, Veroni told the Associated Press that she prefers to transfer it temporarily instead of reopening it quickly.
“The Los Angeles Unified Schools region has never seen a catastrophe like this in its history,” Veroni told the Associated Press. “And I think people are really doing their best, but our school needs a new temporary house with classrooms and teachers who teach personally. This is the only thing that will make people feel comfortable.”
The ash is a toxic soup of burning cars, electronics, batteries, building materials, paints, furniture and all other personal property. The ash contains pesticides, asbestos, plastic, and lead, all of which are children that are more likely children, but scientists still do not know the long -term health effects of exposure to them.
