Former World F1 Jacques Villeneuve champion said Jack Doohan was driving with “despair” after it was discovered that the mistake had led to his huge collision in another practice at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Doohan lost control in a quick turn 1 on his second flying circle of Suzuk Circle after he decided to run the Alpine driver Ryo Hirakawa on his home race in the first practice.
Initially, it looked like his alpine car was the bottom, but a close examination of the replay showed that Drs was still open on his back lap.
On low fuel, turn 1 in Suzuki is generally straight that drivers do not brake. The DRS automatically closes when the driver touches the brake, so entering the first corner, the driver must closed the DRS by hand by pressing the button on their steering wheel.
Doohan did not do so, which is why he lost his strength and embarked on a large spin before hitting the wall.
“We are all released when we see Jack moving away from his incident in free practice 2 and I’m glad to see that it’s okay after checking a caution,” said Alpine team director Oliver Okes.
“It was a misconception that Drs does not close in the 1st time. It’s something to learn and I know that Jack and the team will be ready for tomorrow. His crew will work hard to prepare a car after harm.”
Doohan added, “First of all, I was well after the incident. It was difficult, something that surprised me and I would learn from it.
“I know the team has a lot of work to do to fix the car that will enter tomorrow, so thank you in advance for their efforts. My focus is on tomorrow where we will have a free practice 3 to prepare for qualifications.”
Villeneuve: Desperation caused to make Doohan wrong
Doohan came in 2025 under pressure after Alpine signed Franco Colapint, which led to the speculation that the Argentine was lined up as a replacement.
The 22-year-old collapsed from his domestic Grand Prix and finished 13th a week later in China.
“The problem is that he is known before the first race that he probably won’t end the season,” said F1 1997 Jacques Villeneuve World Champion Sky Sports F1.
“Flavio Flavio Briatore put under a huge pressure (Alpine Boss) Flavio, with Colapinto waiting in his wings, and writing was on the wall. And his ride showed despair, he had to prove that he was at least better than (Pierre) of the gas, so they should keep it.
“When he was already told,” Make a few races, but then you will probably be replaced “… you can see it in his ride. Not comfortable. And when the driver is psychologically in that situation, driving will not be natural and small mistakes will start happening.”
Can Lawson-tsunoda replace the effect on alpine and Doohan?
Doohan, who was on an annual agreement at the Alpine, ended up with the blink of an eye in the Formula 2 2023 Championship, before spending almost a full season aside last year.
However, he was invited to a season that ended the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix season when Esteban Ocon left Alpine early.
Sky Sports F1 ‘With Naomi Schiff, he believes that the Red Bull decision would be replaced by Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda could influence Dohan.
“The conversation about the weekend was that Liam was demolished after two races, and I think he can sometimes give inspiration to other teams to make difficult decisions early,” Schiff said.
“We do not know how much the Jack race has to prove. It is quite sharply to come to this circle and get it out of the FP1 (for Hirakawa), which is so crucial around the path that is so technical, when he has to learn the car, learn the characteristics around the circle.
“I wonder why they didn’t throw Pierre out of the car. He knows this song, he knows the car, he was here several times. He feels sharply.”
