Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali has revealed that he will visit Bangkok next week to talk about adding a race in the Thailand capital to the sports calendar.
Most of the F1 24 races schedule has been locked for several years, but during the winter it was announced that the Dutch Grand Prix would give up the calendar after 2026 and that the Belgian Grand Prix would appear on a rotary basis, starting with the first absence of 2028.
Although the current F1 agreement with its teams enables a maximum of 25 races, and therefore the potential of adding events without loss, there would probably be a driver’s return if a strenuous schedule is growing further.
Speaking solely Sky Sports F1 Martin Brunddle on the eve of the Australian Grand Prix, who opened the season in Melbourne, President of the F1 and Director Domenicali, seems to have suggested that Thailand is the main candidate, among other things, who will join the calendar.
“The good thing we have been able to do in recent years has been to focus on places we believe they are a future for Formula 1,” Domenicali said.
“As for the promoters and clues we have already been on, we have a long -term permanent agreement with many of them that allows them to invest, improve the object, to improve the quality of the fun we need to give our fans.
“We get a lot of attention from other places in the world. After finishing the race here in Melbourne, I go to Bangkok to see … There is a potential interest to develop something there.”
Former Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who was replaced in August 2024, attended last year’s Grand Prix Emilia-Romagna in Imola and explained that the host of the race was partly motivated by the desire to put the country on “Global Radar”.
Domenica’s confirmation of his intention to visit Bangkok on the eve of the Grand Prix next week suggests that the change in the Government’s leadership has not changed the intention of Thailand to paste the calendar.
‘Interest from Africa and South America’
Demilali explained that there is an interest of the whole world to join the calendar and see that the competition procedure will be competitive as important for maintaining “influence” in relation to current high -standing trails.
He added: “And we have other places in Europe, and in Africa there are interests, in South America.
“But the most important thing is to keep this type of situation that it is a privilege (hosting the race), to give us an impact on a major possible improvement wherever we go.”
Demilali says plans for Madrid have replaced Barcelona as the host of the Spanish Grand Prix 2026 on the road, while explaining why Zandvort falls from the calendar.
He said: “Madrid is very hard to make sure the race will be there in two years. It is not an easy project when you start over. They are really motivated. They are here in Australia to show us progress, and there is a great interest in that country.
“Another example in Europe that does an amazing job is Hungary. When you arrive in Hungary, you will be incredibly surprised by the level of investment they do. I think all the cranes in Hungary are here to make sure we have good facilities for fans.
“Also, as always in life, when you have to make some decisions, there are situations that you need to consider. I think Zandvort, for example, admitted the fact that they did an incredible job, they were spotted at the start of the new Formula One phase, but now they understood them, but even in that we were difficult, of what was needed, in what is necessary, In the fact that it was difficult, what needed 2025 and 2026. It will be great.
“So, a lot of vibrations and great interest from other places that I really can’t say today, but I’ll tell our fans, be up to date.”
Decision that comes ‘very quickly’ at the future event of launch of F1
Domenicali also said that the decision would be made “very quickly” whether the F1 would repeat the launch of the All-Tima, which was presented last month in London.
The Arena hosted the F1 75 Live, in which all 10 teams discovered their live – with all 20 drivers present – in front of thousands of fans.
Initially, skepticism watched some of the drivers of sports, but by all accounts there was a great success, exciting and fans who attended and those who watched around the world.
Domenicali said, “I think it was a great success. Showing the platform, also to convince those skeptical, that the F1 must consider great.
“If it happens every year, something we need to talk about. There is certainly a great interest in different promoters from different places in the world, which would like to, say, be considered as 25th Grand Prix to start the season.
“We will make a decision very, very quickly.”
