The European Union Law Organization said at least 25 arrests during a global operation against child abuse forms created by artificial intelligence (AI).
The suspects were part of a criminal group whose members participated in the distribution of the palace images that were fully created of artificial intelligence, according to the agency.
Europol says the process is one of the first sexual assault materials (CSAM). He added that the lack of national legislation against these crimes made it a “exceptional challenge for the investigators.”
The arrests were made at the same time on Wednesday, February 26 during the Camberland operation, led by Danish law enforcement, according to a press release.
Europol said that the authorities from at least 18 other countries participated in the work and the process is still continuing, with more arrests expected in the next few weeks.
In addition to the arrests, 272 suspects have been identified so far, 33 search operations were carried out for the home and 173 electronic devices were seized, according to the agency.
She also said that the main suspect is a Danish citizen who was arrested in November 2024.
The statement said that he “ran a platform on the Internet, as it distributed the materials produced by Amnesty International.”
After conducting a “symbolic batch online”, users from all over the world were able to obtain a password that allowed them “to reach the platform and watch children who are hurt.”
The agency said that online sexual exploitation on the Internet was one of the highest priorities for the European Union law enforcement organizations, which was dealing with “an increased volume of illegal content.”
Europol added that even in cases where the content was completely artificial and there was no real victim, as with the Cumberland operation, “CSAM, which was constructed of artificial intelligence, is still contributing to the perception of children and nationalities.”
“These images created artificially created so that they can be produced by individuals who have a criminal intention, even without a great technical knowledge,” said Catherine CEO Catherine de Ball.
She warned law enforcement who would need to develop “new methods and tools” to confront emerging challenges.
