Moscow has told the Australian government by Moscow that one of its citizens in Russian families is still alive.

Oscar Jenkins, a 32 -year -old teacher, was arrested last year while he was fighting for Ukraine.

“The Australian government has received assertion from Russia that Oscar Jenkins is alive and reservations,” Benny Wong said in a statement on Wednesday.

Earlier, there were reports that Mr. Jenkins had been killed while he was in captivity, as the Australian government referred to “serious concerns” of his well -being.

“We are still witnessing serious concerns of Mr. Jenkins, like a war prisoner.”

Russia also called for his release and reiterated Australia’s position that the Russian Federation is obligated to treat all prisoners of war in accordance with international humanitarian law.

War prisoners are protected from all violence or intimidation by the Geneva Convention.

Earlier, Prime Minister Anthony Albaniz said that the government was “urgently seeking” to confirm that Mr. Jenkins was alive.

The Australian broadcasting company, Ukraine Ambassador to Australia, has reported that it was “good news”, but it called on Moscow to provide “evidence of the video” for its well -being.

Mr. Jenkins is believed to be the first Australian to be held as a prisoner of war during the fighting for Ukraine.

A video appeared in December last year, showing Mr. Jenkins, his hands are linked, hitting in the face and interrogating Russian forces.

He explains that he is a teacher and also a soldier who lives in Australia and Ukraine.

They ask him if he is pushed to fight in Ukraine.
