Connecticut is scheduled to pay approximately $ 5.9 million to the family of a disabled man who was unjustly imprisoned for more than two decades before his release in 2015 when his conviction was canceled in 1992 with the killing and rape of Jeddah 88 years old.
Richard Lapuant, who died at the age of 74 in 2020, was suffering from Dandy Walker syndrome, a rare congenital deformation in the brain that his lawyers say was a factor in his false confession. Labunt’s patent was absolutely announced, but his lawyer and public prosecutor’s office in the state eventually agreed to settle after years of legal battles.
The state commissioner’s office claims on January 2, that it has set the money that will be granted to the family, although it still needs the approval of the Legislative Council. The Office of the Commissioner for claims determines whether people can file lawsuits against the state or receive funds under the unlawful prison law in the state.
The Commissioner for claims, Robert Xia Junior, said that his office agreed that the award was “reasonable and appropriate.”

Paul Castilro, La Gott’s lawyer, said the award is “a recognition by the state of the mistake it committed in the trial and imprisonment of an innocent man. Unfortunately, Richard did not live long enough to witness the acquittal of his final arena.”
“The award is in no way sufficient compensation for what happened to Richard Lapuante,” Castlero said on Friday, adding that the state destroyed the life of his client, “for a crime he did not commit.”
The Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Friday that he “negotiated a solution to this claim in favor of all parties. This reflects this process.”
In 1987, Jeddah, the wife of Labwant, Bernis Martin, a stainless, raped and suffocated apartment in Manchester, Connecticut.
Labunt was convicted of Martin’s murder in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment without being released. The main evidence in the case included the confessions of Labuante during an interrogation that lasted about 10 hours by the Manchester Police.
His lawyers said that his mental disability attributed to him with false confessions, and that confession was extracted with coercion without his lawyer.

The state’s Supreme Court sentenced 4-2 in the 2015 decision that Labwan was deprived of a fair trial because the prosecutors did not reveal the notes of the police officer who may have supported the defense of absence. Later that year, prosecutors said that the new DNA test did not involve Labwan and all charges were dropped.
No one else was accused of killing Martin.
Labuant was released from the reservation shortly after the Hartford Court, wearing a black shirt saying “I did not do it” while throwing his hands in the air victorious.
“Of course, I didn’t do it,” Labunt said at that time. “This wasn’t me. I will not do anything like this for anyone. I will not kill even my worst enemy.”
Castlero said that the case against Labuantes destroyed his family, which avoided him.

Castilro said that before the death of Martin, Labuante and his wife, with cerebral palsy, were “living a common life. They were in good condition.” But after his arrest, his wife divorced him, and he lost every contact with his son, who was young at the time.
After his release from prison, Labuante began to suffer from dementia, and he was placed in a care house in East Hartford and died after a battle with Kovid-19, according to his lawyer.
Labunt has been supported by many defenders, including the groups of Richard Labuante and Centorion’s friends, a Castilero organization to help the convicts wrongly.
