Local police said that the car flocked to the crowd in Vancouver, Canada, saying, “Many people died.”
Vancouver police said that “many other people” were injured during the incident, and the incident occurred immediately after 20 o’clock at the street festival on Saturday (03:00 GMT Sunday).
The army said the driver was detained. It is not yet known how many people were killed.
The police said the driver drove as a pedestrian in the annual Lapu Lapu Festival, which celebrates the Philippine culture in East 41st Avenue and Fraser in southern Vancouver.
The police’s statement said, “We will provide more information as we investigate.”
Video not posted on social media showed a number of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks in the field, and injured people were lying on the ground.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement in X, “I have heard of terrible events at Lapu Lapu Festival in Vancouver.”
He continued to say:
He also thanked the emergency respondents for “prompt action.”
Ken Sim, the mayor of Vancouver, said, “I was shocked and sad for a terrible event.” “I think with all the influenced people and Vancouver’s Philippine community in this incredible time.”
The leaders of other political parties also share the message of mourning.
Pierre PoilIvre, the leader of the Canadian Conservative Party, called the incident a “meaningless attack,” and the leader of the British Columbia New Democratic Party David Eby said, “I’m shocked and hurts.”
Jagmeet Singh, a new Democratic leader who attended the festival but did not attend when the incident occurred, said that innocent people were killed and injured.
“While we were waiting for more, our thoughts gathered today with the victims and their families and Vancouver’s Philippine community.”
Singh, PoilIvre and EBY are all operated in the federal elections in Canada on Monday. Singh’s Burnaby Central Control District is located east of the event.
