Atlanta mayor is looking to stop the displaced camp surveying in the city after an accident when witnesses said they had seen a truck in the city crushing a sleeping man two weeks ago.
According to the Fox 5 ATLANTA report, witnesses described the vision of a truck for public works in Atlanta walking over the man while he was sleeping in his tent earlier this month. The medical examiner in Volton later identified the victim as Cornellius Taylor, 49.
“The aforementioned was transferred to the hospital where the deceased was pronounced,” the Atlanta Police Department said in a statement. “The murder unit responded to the scene and the leadership will be in this investigation of death.”
“I feel sad about this terrible incident, and my thoughts and prayers spread to the family of the deceased,” Mayor Andre Dickens said in a statement. “We will review each of our operations and actions and take all the necessary precautions to ensure that this happens again, and while we continue our important work to accommodate our unrestricted residents and bring our neighbors inside.”

In a video posted on his Instagram account last Friday, Dickens also said he was working with the Atlanta City Council to present new legislation to address the situation.
“This legislation also includes a temporary stop on closing the camps to allow us time to enhance our policies and expand our efforts to communicate, ensuring this work is done safely and that a tragedy like this never happens again,” Dickens said.
The Home program, a program for housing and urban development, said that the camp had prior notice before city officials began to clarify this.
“The closure of camps is a dynamic and cooperative process that gives priority to 90 days. In a statement informed by Fox 5,” said Catherine Vassel, CEO of partners at home.

Anthony Richardson, who lived in the same camp camp where Taylor was killed, told the local station that the city’s crews announced plans to rid the tents, but he probably said that the victim had not heard the announcement at that time.
“We can hear him as he snore,” Richardson told Fox 5.
“My tent was directly behind him, and I could have been if I did not leave,” continued.

Atlanta faces some of the worst crisis in the country. While displacement has decreased within the city’s borders in the past in the past decade, the 2024 report has decreased on timely 7 % since 2023 to nearly 2,900 people.
