UK National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, will discuss a proposed deal on the Shaghus Islands with his American counterpart Mike Walz in Washington this week, according to people familiar with the matter.

Britain is seeking to obtain the approval of the United States on the conditions of the deal that will hand over the UK’s sovereignty abroad to the Indian Ocean to Mauritius, in exchange for securing the medium -term future of a decisive military base in the UK in Diego Garcia.

Although the agreement was developed by the British government and the recently elected administration, the United States has also been interested in looking at this joint military base, which is on the largest height of the archipelago.

London and Port Lewis are preparing for the rule of the Donald Trump administration, in the wake of the previous criticism of the plan of senior allies in the American president – including the Palls and Marco Rubio, who is now the Minister of State.

The UK launched the Trump team on the agreement. One of the persons familiar with the conversations said that London hopes that the relevant American agencies would have time to discuss the deal before he met Powell Waltz, but it was not clear whether the discussion between the agencies would happen in a timely manner.

This week, Powell’s second journey across the Atlantic Ocean in recent months, after he traveled with Prime Minister Staff, Mr. Kiir Starmer Morgan Maksini, to meet with Trump team members – including Palls – in December.

Powell and Waltz are expected to discuss a wide range of things outside the Shaghus Islands deal.

Foreign Minister of Rubio and UK Foreign Minister David Lami discussed a short proposal during his first phone call last week, during which the US Secretary of State warned of the “malicious influence” in China, and the couple is appointed in more details at the meeting.

Moreti officials expect this to be done at the Munich Security Conference next week. The Mauritanian administration floats on March 12, the day of its national independence, as a possible date for signing the treaty, according to British officials.

Prime Minister Morishia Navin Ramgolam has publicly pointed out his support for the recently re -negotiated deal on Tuesday, a step that UK officials have viewed positively.

Ramgolam rejected the previous proposal approved by Britain with his predecessor before reaching power in the ground collapse elections last fall.

The United Kingdom agreed that Mauritius will have a “full sovereignty” on the islands and that the initial lease contract of the 99 -year -old for Sigo Garcia will only be extended with the approval of both countries.

He said that the deal under his predecessor, Pravind Jugnauth, allowed the United Kingdom to extend the unilateral lease contract for 40 years.

Ramgolam added that rental payments will be loaded and protected from inflation, which will greatly enhance them in real terms.

Ramgolam said that both countries are now waiting for our comments on the new conditions, which added that the agreement was “ready to sign”

“President Trump is not a wolf. Ramgolam said:” Let him see whether the agreement is not good or not, “adding:” I am not in a position that allows me to impose a schedule on it “to complete the deal.

Ramgoolam said that under the revised deal, UK’s payments to Mauritius will increase under the lease contract with inflation over 99 years, to replace a previous fixed rate.

“It seems that someone does not know mathematics negotiating,” he said. “the [US dollar] The exchange rate will be fixed [for the 99 years]. Any ordinary student of the fifth or sixth style agrees on the presence of inflation. “

Many people who have knowledge of the process questioned his account, saying that the UK text for the initial agreement indicates “indexed” payments, although he did not specifically connect them to inflation.

People suggested that Ramgolam had an interest in criticizing the agreement set by his predecessor.

Ramgolam, 77, and Jugnauth, are competing strains in Mauritanian policy that clashed over the Shaghus Islands since Mauritius won independence from the United Kingdom in 1968.

The Financial Times reported last month that the United Kingdom offered the payment of Mauritius about 90 million pounds annually for a 99 -year -old Diego Garcia rental contract.

The UK government has avoided an official assertion of the financial settlement, as it insists that the details are confidential.
