Seoul, South Korea – At least two firefighters died hundreds of people evacuated from their homes in South Korea on Saturday, because emergency workers fought to contain more than 30 wild wind.
The largest fires were in southeastern regions, including the Rural County Sancheong, where 260 people fled to the temporary shelter until the flame spread through the surrounding hills, according to the Provincial Government of South Gyeongsang.
Two firefighters were found dead, while another firefighter and the government worker remain disappeared after being trapped by rapid flames made by strong winds in the area. The lifeguards pulled out five emergencies, who are now receiving treatment for their injuries, said the provincial government.
The Korean Forest Service stated that Sancheong Wildfire burned over 500 hectares (1,200 hectares) from Saturday night. Almost 1,600 emergencies workers were distributed 35 helicopters and dozens of vehicles, but only 35% of flames are contained due to the mountainous terrain area and strong winds.
More than 400 people were evacuating their homes in the Uiseong district in northern Gyeongsang province, because the firefighters continued to fight the flames that have burned 300 acres (740 hectares) so far, while tens of the residents in the city of Gimhae fled. Fires also forced closing several highways in the southeast country, including one connection to Ulsan and Busan, the other largest city of South Korea.
The National Government marked the province of northern and southern Gyeongsang and the southeastern city of Ulsan as a disaster zone, the Earth, Choi Sang-Mok, promised all-out response to turn off the flames.
Fires were also reported in the central Chungcheong and southwestern Jello Province.
